Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. It’s a sacred, magical day on many calendars around the world. It marks a transition point, similar to the full moon night on monthly lunar calendars. After this, the days get shorter again as the year swings back toward winter.

On this day, we acknowledge all that the sun does for our world. It helps us grow, it feeds our plants and our souls, it brings great possibilities to our lives and to our planet. Traditionally, Midsummer is the day that couples publicly commit to each other through Handfasting. It is an important day for collecting healing herbs and medicines. It is a day pregnant with possibilities. It is a day marked by ceremony, community, and change.

Happy Midsummer.

Cooking in Season

I’m so excited! I’ll be offering one of my Creative Cooking on a Slim Budget workshops to a group of teen girls next week.

In this workshop, I provide recipes and ingredients for three healthy dinner dishes, and we work together to make the dishes. The main ingredients for these meals are always selected from seasonal produce (stuff that naturally grows at this time of year, and is therefore easier and less expensive to buy), and we get to eat what we’ve made at the end of the workshop. It’s a delicious experience.

In the past, I’ve combined forces with local food closets. They provide most of the ingredients from their in-season supplies for low-income families, and I use some of the less familiar foods like turnips, arugula, squash, garlic tops, etc in my recipes. That way, more people learn how to cook yummy meals with the foods they are most likely to find on the food closet shelves.

Most importantly, a group of women get together over the kitchen table, and share our kitchen wisdom for keeping our families healthy,  happy, and whole. It’s a wonderful evening “out with the girls” for most of us. I’ll let you know when I offer the next one. I’d love to have you join me.

Marriage Is What Brings Us Together

I am, of course, quoting The Princess Bride.

I believe that finding a true partner in life can be challenging, especially because we have to learn to be our own best friend before we can be a full partner to someone else. I also believe that it is important to acknowledge a commitment between two loving people through ceremony. Or more traditionally, through marriage.

The marriage ceremony is an opportunity to honor that deep connection that two people have built into a shared life together. An opportunity to talk about hopes, dreams, and fears, and to commit to a common goal. It’s a time of transition, and of calling on the larger community to support your union.

As an Ordained Pagan Ministerial Counselor, I am licensed to perform legal marriage ceremonies here in Oregon. And I love to support a good partnership. If you are looking for someone to perform a legal and binding ceremony that is uniquely yours, give me a call. Workshop: 6/20/2010

Intuition and Pagan Practices

The workshop will be a basic overview of pagan spiritual beliefs, including Wicca, and the role that intuition plays in our spiritual practices.

We’ll look at different ways that we connect with our own intuition in daily life. We’ll also take a look at various Pagan beliefs and practices, and how they relate to intuition and well-being. Things like meditation, Chakras, medicinal herbs, drawing energy, protective circles, medicine bags, the Celtic Language of Trees, Tarot, and more!

This is a discussion-based educational workshop. You do not need to be Pagan to participate. I’ll also bring a lot of books and titles/topics for those who are interested in learning more. This is a basic class, respectful of all non-violent beliefs and practices.

There will be a raffle for a fun gift-bag of intuitive and healing tools from the Crystal Cavern of Oregon at the end of the class.
