Sacral Chakra.3

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

How are your daily walks coming along? The weather has been perfect for evening strolls, though I realized last night that the days are getting shorter. Dusk fell around 8pm. Remember when daylight stretched all the way to ten at night?

I’d like you to think about your Sacral Chakra. The second chakra, located below your belly button. This chakra helps us know who we are, and stay true to ourselves in any given situation. To appreciate the darkness and the light within our own make up. So I’d like you to take pen and paper, and write.

Who do you want to be when you grow up? Not just a job– but what aspects of you the job you want symbolizes. Are you a healer? A go-getter? Someone who cares deeply about providing for your family? Do you feel deeply, do you try not to feel? Are you an artist, a great cook– Who do you want to be when you grow up? This should be a long list, or a few pages of writing it out. Delve.

Take your time. Think about your values. Which ones are important to YOU? Which ones have you taken on because you were “supposed to value that”? Who do you want to be? Not because others would value you, but because those traits and activities and ways of being in the world CALL TO YOU.

When you’ve exhausted your list, go back through it. Highlight the ones that catch your attention. Highlight the ones that you really feel.

Write those down on one side of a fresh page. On the other side, think about what you do, or what small thing you could easily add to your life as it is now that moves you toward that way of being in the world. You may realize (in fact, if you are really seeing your self, and not just having a pitty party, you WILL realize) that you have already become some of the things on your list. That you have already taken some steps toward others. You may come to realize that if you start slowly, and acknowledge your accomplishments and your real self (the self underneath all those social standards and professional standards and coping mechanisms)… You can be the person you dream of becoming.

You’re already half-way there. Welcome home to your Sacral Chakra. Your way of being in the world.

Be Well.

Sacral Chakra .2

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

The Sacral Chakra is often very challenging for women because it is where we come into our own as individuals, express our passions, feel our emotions, and enjoy our bodies. All things that our society teaches us not to do.

This chakra has a lot to do with water, and with expression. I’d love for each of us to take time this week to express our creativity. Paint something free-flowing and BIG. Even if it’s just a little water on a brush and a blank white wall that will dry back to blank white. Use finger paints. Work with clay or some other medium that really lets you be physical in your expression. And don’t worry about perfection. That’s not the point of this. The point is to involve your body in active expression of inner creativity.

Take time to light a candle, lock the bathroom door, and take a long cleansing bath or shower. Think of it as washing yourself clean energetically. A safe place to get out all the anger, fear, passion, joy– and become open to who you are and how you are in the world. A water cleansing. Think about using a little EO in the water (or put a drop on the hot tap so it radiates into the air of your shower)– maybe vanilla or rose or lavender. Maybe gardenia or jasmine.

Take walks this week, get comfortable with how your body moves through the world. Find at least one part of your body that you think is beautiful. For example, I’ve noticed that my feet are really sexy. I love my high arch, and the way foot flows into toes. I also love my little pinkey fingers. They are crooked due to a recurring genetic trait of my mom, my grandmother, my great grandmother. They remind me of who I am, and where I came from. And I like that about that part of my body. What do you like about your body? Your hair? The color of your eyes? The curve where your hip flairs out?

You are beautiful. Not just because of your body, but also because of your beautiful heart, and your wonderful way of being in the world. Embrace your unique self. Meditate on your own sweetness, your desires, and the positive changes you are making in your life and your health.

Be Well.

Sacral Chakra

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

The second chakra is the Sacral Chakra. It governs emotion, passion, intimacy, sexuality, creativity, comfort with one’s body, self-nurturing and change.

The second chakra is connected to water, one’s sense of taste, one’s ability to cope with change, movement and the color orange. The second chakra is located below the navel, in the lower abdomen, genitals and womb. It affects one’s circulatory system, bladder and kidneys, sexual and reproductive organs.

As we work with this chakra, it is important to keep in mind that without change, there is no growth, no movement, and no life. The Sacral Chakra is about learning to go with the flow. Energy, abundance, passion, life force, and change all function as flowing rivers, full of movement and direction. As we work with our second chakra, we learn to feel the flow, and move with it. Going against these tides is exhausting, and rarely helps us to reach our destination.

Grace, self-expression, self-awareness, intuition and flexibility all offer the benefit of moving with our personal tides, life changes, and with the greater flow of prosperity and fulfillment in the world. It is in working with the second chakra that we begin to understand and accept who we are.  We differentiate between the Self, and the World. We become pregnant with possibility, and we discover that creative passion can be expressed with the body, the mind, and the spirit.

Our goal this month is to let go of limiting thoughts and self-judgments, and open to flow. Welcome to Sacral Chakra month. Watch for the password-protected post each week. This will be your opportunity to continue working with me on your Sacral Chakra. Second chakra.

Be Well.

First Chakra .5

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Take a little time to walk, eat healthy foods, drink lots of water, meditate, and really focus on your connection to your Root Chakra, and the roots of your own energy digging deeply into the Earth that supports you. Remember that all good changes take both time and effort to accomplish. A little bit every day adds up to big improvements over the course of a month.

This is our last Root Chakra week. Next week, we begin Sacral Chakra. With the start of Sacral Chakra, and through the remaining six chakras, workshop information will be separate from the regular blog.

At the start of each week, I will post a password-only post. And I’ll post the password. Anyone interested in continuing on to Sacral Chakra need only login to the Password Post, and follow the instructions. This allows folks who want to continue working with and healing their chakras to do so without the clutter of unrelated blog entries. It also keeps those longer, more involved chakra posts from overwhelming casual readers.

Remember, you are the best judge of what is right for you. It is in deciding what actions we will take to be healthy, happy, and whole that we begin to take personal responsibility for our lives. You are the hero of your own life story. You decide what quests the hero takes on, what goal is worthy of the hero’s sacrifice. You decide every day if your hero will be well-rested, supported, and prepared for the dangers she wants to overcome, the success she hopes to find. Become conscious of your own life story.

Be Well.

Root Chakra .4

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

We’ve been focusing on the Root Chakra, the first chakra, this month. How was the writing exercise? Did you gain some useful insights?

We talked briefly about the Rights of the Root Chakra: the Right To Be Here, the Right To Have, and the verb “I have…” How would you complete those sentences for yourself now? Get centered. Find a comfortable seat, take a few deep breaths, and feel that growing connection of energy between the Earth and the base of your spine. Visualize it like a tripod built of legs and energy– a very sturdy basis on which to build. Now, what do you have? What skills or experiences or self-knowledge will you use as the strong, positive, healthy basis for the next six months of energy work and personal healing?

Get solid with yourself. There are decisions, experiences, successes in your past that you can celebrate. Celebrate yourself– get past the shallow cultural norm that says we shouldn’t acknowledge our strengths, abilities, and personal beauty. I’m here to tell you that you are beautiful– from the inside out.

The Root Chakra is all about Earth, and Smell, and  Grounding, and Survival. It’s about building a strong base and a strong framework for your ongoing growth. Consider burning some cedar incense during your evening meditation, or holding a chunk of garnet or bloodstone in your free hand as you take an evening stroll (it’s much too hot to go out at mid day!).

Animals associated with the Root Chakra include Elephants, Ox, and the Bull. Good solid animals, known as the embodiment of wisdom, and removers of obstacles. Once they make a decision about what path they will take, it is impossible to stop their progress along that path. The chief operating force of the Root Chakra is gravity.

Think about that. Feel yourself held firmly against Mother Earth by the supporting force of Gravity. Understand that you are securely attached to Earth– and that we are constantly surrounded by energy. Gravity is one form of Energy. Earth is another, and you yourself are another form of Energy. Complete with skin boundaries and an emotional connection to the strong push-pull of the earth’s tides, and the moon. Just like Earth’s Oceans, we are affected by our relationship to gravity, and to the energy field of the Moon. Tonight is the first night of the full moon. Herb Moon. Midwife Moon.

A perfect time for me to make my final commitment to the life of a healer. A perfect time for you to acknowledge your commitment to self-healing.

Be Well.

Root Chakra .3

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

So how have those walks and EO’s been working for you? Notice yourself calming down a bit? More able to cope with challenges and stress? Feeling centered? These are goals of our Root Chakra month.

Exercise: Take a minute to think about the Root Chakra, about your connection to the Earth. Think about growing your sense of balance, of safety, of success from the roots up.

I’d like to give you a list of words relating to the Root Chakra. Get a blank sheet of paper and a pen. Write down the words from the list that really resonate with you, or with the goals you’d like to achieve on your personal path to being well this month. Ready?

instinct
security
survival
success
potential
fight-or-flight
stability
self-realization
physical movement
dance
balance
formation
structure
root
seed
body consciousness
material abundance
prosperity
resources
foundations

Now that you’ve written down some of these words, think about the life experiences they bring to mind. Was there a time in the past that you really felt grounded, successful, resourceful, or centered in your body– with a firm foundation to grow from? Take a few minutes to journal about your memory. If this isn’t working for you, journal about what the words you’ve selected mean to you at this point in your life process. How do you define them? What events in your life would you use as examples?

What did that experience feel like? What did it sound like– what feedback did you get from that experience? What did it smell like? What did you do to take care of yourself and your physical well-being during that experience, or that time in your life? How does that experience inform your current goals, or the understanding you have of your own abilities, skills, resources, and potential?

Take a few minutes when you are done writing to sit with that sense of accomplishment and solidity. Think about areas of your life now where you could integrate that past experience and the lessons it taught you. Think about building a solid foundation for your current goals and projects and health.

Be Well.

Root Chakra.2

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

The inner state we achieve when our Root Chakra is well-grounded and freely flowing is one of stillness, security, and stability.

With a solid Root Chakra comes our understanding that we each have the right to be here. We have the right to have good health and happiness.

Because Root Chakra is primarily associated with our sense of smell, Essential Oils are a great place to start working with this chakra. They are portable, and easy to incorporate into our existing lifestyle. Rosemary works exceptionally well in a bath, according to K. Govinda. Add between ten and thirty drops just before turning off the water. The smell of Clove or Cyprus EO are great companions for meditation, or for a walk in the woods.

(You don’t have to empty your mind to meditate– Meditation is about focusing exclusively on one thing. That could be an empty mind, it could be focusing on your breathing, it could be focusing on the childhood experiences that shaped your sense of trust, security, and connection with yourself and the Earth.)

The next step is to start spending time in nature– in connection with the Earth. Consider gardening, walking out to a comfortable chair on the porch, taking a walk around the closest park block every Tuesday and Friday nights, taking a yoga class (like the ones offered by my friend Eugene– see WEST and Friends), or turning off the TV and paying attention to the way it feels to be in your body while you do your usual exercise routine.

Sometimes the mantras associated with each chakra can have a powerful effect on our understanding. Find a piece of red paper, or one whose color appeals to you, and write “I have the RIGHT TO BE HERE.” Post it on your bathroom mirror, or somewhere that you will see it every day. Other mantras might include “I enjoy my body.” or “I trust myself and the Earth to provide all that I need.” maybe “I am becoming whole.” or “I trust in the power of life.”

You can also make your own positive statement. It needs to be a statement that you WANT to be true about you. Since we are working on Root Chakra, look back at previous descriptions of what our Root Chakra does for us. Use those aspects of a healthy first chakra to help focus your energy with a positive mantra of being present in your own life story.

Take a few minutes, or a few hours, every day to focus on the connection between your Root Chakra and the Earth. Feel the connection grow stronger. Feel your foundation grow stronger. Feel the energy of the Earth feeding the energy of your own vitality.

Be Well.

Root Chakra Basics

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Chakra One, the Root Chakra, is represented by a deep red color.

It’s energy focuses on the element Earth, on our roots, grounding or groundedness, survival, body, food, matter, and beginning. And so we are beginning.

The Root Chakra helps us deal with stress, manages our survival mechanisms, maintains our sense of basic trust, and assists our struggle for survival. This chakra is rooted in our material existence, the physical day-to-day that helps or hinders our basic function and survival.

If the Root Chakra is blocked or underdeveloped, it means that everything above it isn’t built on a firm foundation. We might have issues with trust, be easily unbalanced or pushed off-kilter by life events. It may be hard for us to overcome challenges and turn obstacles into opportunities.

The Root Chakra affects our nervous system from the ground (or root) up. It also relates to the solid parts of our bodies– our bones, and large intestine (which passes solid waste). Since we aren’t focusing on the secondary chakras, the Root Chakra is our opportunity to heal or rebalance our legs, feet, and knees, as well.

The Root Chakra is the most dense, having to do with solid matter, so it is also the slowest to change. There is a lot packed into its function, or lack of function, in our lives. “If we do not balance this chakra before we progress to others, our growth will be without roots, ungrounded, and will lack the stability necessary for true growth.” (Wheels of Life- Anodea Judith, Ph.D)

According to K. Govinda (A Handbook of Chakra Healing), blockages in the Root Chakra can cause a number of ailments, including:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Constipation
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Skeletal problems
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pain in the legs and feet
  • Varicose veins
  • Anemia and other blood disorders
  • Stress-induced ailments
  • Allergic reactions
  • Anxiety
  • Lack of Trust
  • Depression
  • Fear-based codependency, which creates a sense of security when with the grounded person

The most important aspect of healing or rebalancing the energy of the Root Chakra is grounding. Learning to ground and center our awareness within our own bodies, and the physical here and now of our life experiences.

Survival, our Bodies, and our relationship to Foods, particularly meat and proteins, are also important to our work with this chakra. We’ll talk about those as the month progresses.

Taking walks, noticing the colors of the earth under our feet, taking a beginner’s yoga class, stamping your feet, jumping up and down, or receiving professional massage are all great ways to reconnect with your body, and with its connection to the Earth.

When I first started working with my under-developed Root Chakra, I found a cheap red cotton bath matt, and used it as a cushion during my attempts at meditation. I put a few drops of EO on the edge of the matt. It was my way of focusing my attention and my energies on reconnecting my Root Chakra with the earth, and utilizing my Root Chakra as the basis of my new healing process– the foundation that holds up my body. “Resting on the ground, we cannot fall, which provides a sense of inner security. It is at the first chakra plane that ideas become reality.” (A. Judith)

Other tools for working with the chakras include Essential Oils, Herbal Teas, Stones, Bach Flower Remedies, and healing rituals. If your Root Chakra is well-developed and flowing strongly, a little positive attention and maintenance doesn’t hurt. Who knows, you may even uncover new understandings of who you are, and how you got here.

Here’s a final checkup (from K. Govinda) of when you need to work on your Root Chakra:

  • If you feel you’ve lost trust in life
  • If you don’t feel at home in your own body
  • If you are easily overwhelmed by life
  • If you feel chronically tired and lacking in energy
  • If you don’t exercise enough
  • If your digestion isn’t working properly (this covers any/all parts of the process from top to bottom)
  • If you have a tendency toward back pain

Here are some resources for Root Chakra healing– we’ll talk about each one in more detail as the month progresses. Essential oils such as cloves, rosemary, cypress, and cedar. Putting a few drops of one of these that appeals to you on a hankerchief, and smelling it from time to time during the day is a great start.

Consider purchasing a little piece of ruby, hematite, or garnet stone, and holding it or keeping it with you over the course of our month. Different stones have different electromagnetic vibrations, which interact with our own bodily energetic vibrations in different ways. And a more “down-to-earth” explanation of this healing method is that the specific stone you select is connected to your Root Chakra healing process in your mind. So every time you touch or notice that stone, you’ll remember the work you are doing to clear your Root Chakra.

Most important of all, make your own decisions about what will be best for you and your health.

Be Well.
